Frequently asked questions
-
What makes Kenya AA special?
Kenya AA is the top grade in Kenya's coffee grading system, which classifies beans by screen size. AA means the beans have passed through a size 17 or 18 screen, selecting the largest beans from the harvest. Larger beans tend to be denser, which helps them develop flavour more evenly during roasting. Combined with Kenya's volcanic soil and high-altitude growing conditions, this produces a cup with a clarity and fruit-forward character that is difficult to find in other origins.
-
What does the AA grade mean?
Kenya grades its coffee by bean size using numbered screens. AA is the largest classification (screen size 17/18), followed by AB, C, and smaller grades below that. Grade does not directly determine flavour, but larger, denser beans from Kenya's top growing regions tend to produce the most pronounced and consistent cup characteristics. Our Kenya AA is sourced from highland farms in central Kenya.
-
What flavours should I expect from Kenya AA?
Sweet plum and grape are the dominant flavour notes in this bean. The acidity is bright and fruit-forward rather than sharp or sour. The body is full, and the finish is clean. These characteristics are typical of washed Kenyan Arabica grown at altitude. The wet processing method used in Kenya removes the fruit before drying, which keeps the cup clean and lets the bean's natural flavour come through without interference.
-
Which brewing method suits Kenya AA best?
Kenya AA works well across espresso, cafetière, drip filter, and pour over. Espresso gives a dense, fruit-forward shot. Cafetière and drip filter give more space to the plum and grape notes. Pour over gives the cleanest expression of the bean's character. If you are trying Kenya AA for the first time, a cafetière or drip filter is the most straightforward starting point.
-
Is this coffee available year-round?
No. Kenya AA is a limited edition, available while stocks last. Kenya has two harvest seasons. The main crop runs from October to December, and a smaller fly crop runs from June to August. Production volumes vary from year to year, and once this batch is sold we cannot guarantee when it will return.
-
How should I store Kenya AA coffee beans?
Store the beans in the sealed foil bag between uses, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, moisture, and strong smells. Do not store in the fridge or freezer unless the bag is completely airtight, as temperature fluctuations introduce condensation. Grind only what you need and replace the seal after each use. Each Caffé Prima bag has a one-way degassing valve that releases CO2 without letting air in. Whole beans stored this way will hold their flavour for four to six weeks after opening.
